Billing help
ChatGPT charged me twice - what should I do?
Two lines on a statement can look alarming, but not every second line is a second charge. Start by separating a temporary card hold from a settled payment, then match each charge to the platform that actually billed it.

First, is it really a second charge?
Open your card or bank app and look at the transaction status. Pending authorizations and completed charges behave differently, and different merchant names may point to different billing platforms.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending authorization | A temporary hold that has not settled yet. | Wait for it to clear. Pending holds usually disappear or turn into one posted charge within a few business days. |
| Two posted charges | Both amounts have completed and appear in your available balance. | Treat it as a duplicate charge. Gather both receipts and contact the merchant that billed you. |
| Different merchants | One charge says OpenAI and another says Apple, Google or a top-up provider. | These are separate purchases, not necessarily a duplicate. Check which plan each charge belongs to. |
The four most common causes
The web and the app both have a subscription
A ChatGPT plan bought on the web does not cancel a separate Apple or Google subscription. It is possible to keep two active billing relationships by accident.
A retry created a second order
A payment page that appears to hang can tempt a second attempt. If the first attempt actually completed, the second one may create another charge or order.
A pending hold looks like a charge
Banks often display an authorization immediately and keep it visible for several days. The final statement may contain only one settled transaction.
A direct top-up was combined with an official plan
If you bought a one-month direct top-up while an official subscription was still renewing, the account can receive two separate billing events in the same period.
A payment that was declined can still create a pending authorization. Read the payment declined checklist if the first attempt failed rather than completed.
The fix order that avoids wasted time
- 1
Open the statement, not just the notification
Write down the date, amount, merchant descriptor and whether each line is pending or posted. A screenshot of the card app is enough to start.
- 2
Check ChatGPT billing on the web
Open ChatGPT settings, then look for subscription or billing information. Confirm whether the plan is active and which payment method is attached.
- 3
Check Apple and Google subscriptions separately
On iPhone, open Settings, tap your Apple ID, then Subscriptions. On Android, open Google Play, then Payments and subscriptions. Cancel any duplicate plan there, not inside ChatGPT.
- 4
Collect the matching receipts
For a web purchase, use the receipt email or billing history. For an app purchase, use the Apple or Google receipt. For a GPT AI order, use the order number and checkout email.
- 5
Contact the merchant that actually charged you
OpenAI, Apple, Google and a direct top-up provider each handle their own refunds. Sending an Apple receipt to OpenAI will not resolve an App Store charge.
- 6
Use a bank dispute only after the merchant route
A chargeback can take weeks and may lock the account while it is investigated. Start with the merchant and keep the support thread and receipts.
If one of the charges came from GPT AI
GPT AI orders are one-time top-ups. A normal order creates one charge and one order number. If you were charged without receiving an order, or two charges point to the same order, contact support with the details below:
- The checkout email and order number from each confirmation.
- The payment date, amount and last four digits of the card.
- A screenshot showing whether the bank lists the transaction as pending or posted.
Email support@gptai.lat with those details. Never send your full card number, ChatGPT password or a one-time verification code. The top-up failed guide covers orders that paid but did not deliver.
How to prevent the next duplicate
- Before buying a top-up, check whether an official subscription is already set to renew.
- Use one payment route for one plan. Do not buy the same month twice on web and mobile.
- Keep the receipt email and order number until the plan is visible in your account.
- If a checkout page seems stuck, refresh the order status before paying again.
- Turn off auto-renewal before changing plans if you do not want the old plan to bill again.
Charged twice FAQ
Why does my card show two ChatGPT charges?
The most common reasons are a pending authorization plus a settled charge, two subscriptions on different platforms, or a retry that created a second order. Check whether each line is pending or posted before assuming both are final charges.
I searched for charged GPT and my statement shows a charge. What does it mean?
A charge described that way is usually a billing descriptor or a search phrase, not a separate product. Match the date and amount to your ChatGPT, Apple, Google or top-up receipt and identify the merchant before requesting a refund.
Can I get a refund for a duplicate ChatGPT Plus charge?
Duplicate or unauthorized charges are the strongest refund cases. Contact the merchant that billed you with both receipts. OpenAI, Apple and Google each have separate refund processes and response times.
Does cancelling ChatGPT stop a charge that already posted?
Cancelling stops a future renewal, not a charge that has already completed. If the current billing period has started, you normally keep access until its end; a refund depends on the merchant and the reason for the request.
What should I send GPT AI support about a duplicate top-up?
Send the checkout email, both order numbers, the payment date and the last four digits of the card. Do not send your full card number, ChatGPT password or one-time login code. Unmatched or duplicate GPT AI charges are reviewed and refunded when verified.
How long does a duplicate charge refund take?
Merchant refunds often appear within 5 to 10 business days, while card issuers can take longer. A pending authorization usually clears on its own and should not be treated as a completed refund.
